DiskPulse is a very good freeware utility to inspect your netbook’s disk activity in real-time. There are three versions of the software available: Free, Pro and Ultimate. Obviously, I tested the free version on my netbook and found it rock solid in terms of performance.
When you launch the application and start monitoring, by default, you will start getting floods of file changes from all over the system. But don’t get overwhelmed by that as you can easily narrow down your inspection on exactly what you’re interested in. You can also set it to log only when certain events occurs or you can use it to check only specific folders and not the whole disk.

To narrow down your inspection, after starting the app, click on Monitor and choose the drives and directories you would like to watch for changes. Then, select the events that should be monitored, and also apply some rules and tweak some advanced settings before hitting Start. Once the monitoring have started, you can pause or stop the monitoring at any time, you can also change layouts, and can do more stuffs. All changes will be shown in the main window in real-time.
The free version should be more than enough for most users since it can be used to monitor any selected directory.
