Everyone likes a fast computer be it desktops or laptops but when it comes to netbooks, well most of them are not blessed with real power. So, it becomes extremely important for a netbook user to choose wisely. After all you will never want to kill your netbook’s Atom processor due to overwork! You will also don’t want to kill your netbook due to a malicious attack. It is very important that you choose security suites that are nice to your netbook while being light on resources.
We have found two antivirus solutions that are perfect for netbooks and fits in the criteria to be one of the best security solution, while also providing an excellent level of protection.
1. Microsoft Security Essentials

We had already talked about Microsoft Security Essential through one of our earlier post. In our tests, we found that it’s not as light on Windows XP as you may have read elsewhere, but if you’ve got yourself the newer breed of Windows 7 netbooks then you will find Microsoft Security Essential (or MSE) to be very light and it will then be an excellent choice as antivirus program. MSE scans are fast, you can schedule scans, and according to some independent labs, it’s virus detection rate is respectable. One disadvantage of using MSE as your antivirus software is its complete lack of any kind of heuristics-based protection. Due do this, it may not be that effective to combat new viruses whose information is not in the antivirus definition file yet. But, it is updated often with new database and is also updated via Windows Update. So if you like MSE, then try it and see how your netbook handles it.
2.Panda Cloud Antivirus

We have also talked about Panda Cloud Antivirus before. Panda’s cloud solution is the first of its kind of antivirus solution which is built to take the advantage of the power of cloud computing. Since, it doesn’t even download any virus definitions, is fast, light and is a good option for netbook users. CPU use of Panda Cloud Antivirus is very low and the memory footprint is about 8MB when idle. Panda Cloud Antivirus keeps your netbook protected even when you are not connected to the cloud by keeping a local cache of signature files. Panda Cloud Antivirus is having a huge user base who are contributing to the cloud.
Have you got any other antivirus solution that runs light while providing effective protection for your netbook? Share it with us in the comments!

I have used both programs mentioned, I like the Panda cloud antivirus because of its lightness.
SK Mezanul Haque,
Have you looked in to Immunet Protect? Immunet is also a great lightweight (less than 5MB) AV software worth checking out. I use it on my netbook and hardly notice it running.
