FreeCommander is an easy-to-use alternative to the standard Windows Explorer and is one of the best netbook file manager. Previously, we have seen Explore++, a free, multi-tab supported file manager for Windows. FreeCommander helps you with all the necessary functions to manage your data.
You can install FreeCommander as a full program or as a portable program so you can run it from a USB flash drive. A U3 version is also available for USB flash drives with that ability.

The application window will be very familiar to those of you who are using Total Commander. FreeCommander has two panes split vertically (or horizontally). It’s best suited to work both with mouse, keyboard or hotkey. FreeCommander can change almost any file attribute (including timestamps for sorting problems), compare and synchronize directories, securely wipe files off a drive, and basically treat .ZIP and other archives like real folders. Other notable features of FreeCommander are:
- Built in file viewer to view files in hex, binary, text or image format
- Built in FTP client
- Multi rename tool
- Create and verify MD5 checksums
- File splitting
- Calculation of folder size
- Folder comparison/synchronization
FreeCommander is a free download for Windows only.
