The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable portable security tool for netbook users that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works seamlessly with your existing antivirus software. That is, Microsoft Safety Scanner works independently of other anti-virus solutions, and can works with any existing anti-virus product installed on the system.
Another similar application by Microsoft is called Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool. To make Microsoft Safety Scanner simple and easy to use, the user interface provides only three type of scanning options for user to choose from: quick scan, full scan and customized scan.
The quick scan option will scan the areas of the system most likely to contain viruses, spyware and other potential unwanted software. Full scan option, as the name suggests, will scan the entire system which may take up to several hours to complete. Customization scan on the other hand will scan the contents of a user-specified folder.
Note: Microsoft Safety Scanner does not support auto update and will expire in 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.
