If God forbid, your netbook gets stolen or lost, you not only lose all your personal documents, official data, confidential data, etc but also peace of mind. After all you cannot be sure how those thieves are going to handle your data. Also, there is a huge possibility of misuse of your data. But you can do a certain things to prevent your netbook from getting stolen as once it has been stolen there is a very little chance of getting it back.
Prey is a lightweight application that will help you in finding a misplaced netbook or a laptop if it gets stolen. Prey is open source, cross-platform supported and is totally free to use.
Prey works by checking a url regularly for existence, i.e., for an HTTP 200 response. If the url exists it will send out the collected data to a specified email account. The date includes:
- Status of the computer
- List of running programs and active connections
- Detailed network and WI-FI report
- Screenshot of running desktop
- A picture of the thief (if the your device is equipped with a webcam)
About the url that has to be created, you can sign up at a free web hosting service such as Blogger (www.blogger.com) to create the url that the software program checks periodically.

After creating the URL, you are then required to specify login data of a SMTP server so that the collected data about the theft can be transferred. This anti-theft software is available for the Windows, Linux and Macintosh operating system. The Linux and Mac version are more advanced and come with a bi-lingual interface, automatic connection to the first open Wi-Fi network and other features. You can get some help regarding the installation procedure here.
