USB Flash Security is free software to password protect data on USB Flash Drive. This software installs on your USB device, and can encrypt data stored on Flash Drive. Whenever someone tries to access that data, they need to provide the password that you chose at time of installation of this USB security software. This software comes with a decent free version as well, that works with Flash drives up to 4 GB in size.

The free USB security tool is easy to download and install on a USB drive with an extremely simple but effective interface. The security software comes with an easy-to-understand documentation from the Japanese developers – Kashu System Design. Grammatical translation errors notwithstanding, the instructions on the document are self explanatory.

How to Install USB Flash Security to Password Protect Flash Drive:

You need to first download and install this software on your PC, and after that it will install itself on Flash drive.

Once installed on PC, the Flash drive encryption software starts searching for any Flash device connected to your system, and detects one as soon as you connect it. If there are more than one USB sticks connected, you can choose the USB drive on which you wish to install the software. This is one of the biggest advantages of using the USB Flash Security software. Since it is installed on your USB, it is system-agnostic. In other words, you don’t need to reinstall it on some other system where you would be using your USB flash drive. The other obvious advantage is that it does not use your system space and resources.

Once you select the USB drive and click on install, you get a dialog box similar to the one below which points to one of the biggest criticisms of the free security tool: the installation of the encryption software on your USB device deletes all the data on it. Hence one needs to keep the back up of all the files on the USB drive before installing the software on it.

USB Flash Security would then prompt for the password in a simple password creation wizard with an option to set a hint to remember it.

Once you enter your details, before the installation starts, you get another warning about the deletion of the files on your Flash drive. On confirmation, the installation is completed.

How to use USB Flash Security:

Now when you connect the USB flash drive to another system, you’ll see following files:

This is another well thought off feature of USB Flash Security tool since it does not automatically flash the password entry dialog unless you click on the “UsbEnter” executable. Why make it easier for the person trying to steal your data?

The password entry dialog is again a very simple and intuitive interface. Once you bring your cursor near the password entry widget, you see the password hint that you had entered while installing the software.

Type the correct password and voila!! You see your files, untouched, safe as a house – with a strong lock of course.

As you see, the USB Flash Security tool is one of the simplest tools to safeguard the most complex and critical data with you. It takes minutes to install it on your USB stick and hardly any time to understand it. Even though in the free version you do not get advanced features like ‘Password Change’, ‘Input User Information’, and limitation of 4Gb Flash drive, it is a good download. Like they say, ‘all good things in life are for free’.
